Swipe Right on Life: Seniors and Smartphones

Not too long ago, we had phones that stayed put. They sat on a table like a stubborn old dog. You’d walk into the kitchen, yank that curly cord as far as it could stretch, and pray no one in the house picked up another extension to eavesdrop.

Fast forward to today: the phone isn't just untethered — it’s practically become an extension of your hand. Smartphones are our calendars, cameras, mailboxes, flashlights, weather stations, travel agents, health monitors, magnifying glasses, and for a lucky few, a grandchild-bragging device ("Look at this video of Lily playing soccer— isn't she just spectacular?!").

And you know what? Seniors are crushing it. Forget the myth that older adults can't learn new technology. I see it every day: people who once said, "Oh, I could NEVER figure this out," are now texting, FaceTiming, ordering groceries, checking their heart rate, and playing Wordle like world champions.

The secret? It’s not about mastering the machine. It’s about mastering your mindset. Instead of saying, "I'm too old for this," you say, "I'm curious about this." Instead of getting frustrated and giving up, you remember how you once learned to drive a stick shift uphill. (Now that was tricky.) And you try again. And again! Practice is the single best thing you can do when learning to use your device. When you are practicing, you are learning and when you are learning, your brain is engaged and your memory becomes better. You will learn when you adjust your thinking, open your mind to new things and realize that practicing strengthen your cognitive health. It's a good thing!

Smartphones are just tools. They’re here to make life easier, not harder. To connect you to your loved ones, your passions, your memories, and your future adventures. Sure, the first few tries might be a little frustrating. You tap the wrong thing, and the page changes in an unexpected way or you open the wrong app, you wonder why your cousin Martha can't hear you during your Zoom call.

But every time you pick up your smartphone with curiosity and a dash of humor, you are doing more than using a device — you are claiming your place in the future. And let’s be honest: you’ve earned it.

So go ahead. Download that app. Send that emoji. Take that selfie with your great-grandbaby. Life is moving forward, and so are you — one swipe, one click, one delighted discovery at a time.
